News / Robert sold his Epiphone Les Paul Bass
« on: July 25, 2014, 07:04:04 AM »
I came across this link a few months ago when I was looking for a Les Paul Bass like Robert's. Turns out he sold his Epiphone Les Paul Bass. I don't know why he would do that considering the awesome memories he might have with it, but maybe times are tight and needs the money. Anyways, I just thought it was interesting especially for those who are into all the gear that the Five use (...or don't use anymore).

Hi everyone!

My band, Due Return, is releasing our debut EP on 26/9/13 and we are celebrating it with a free gig which you are all most welcome to come to. All those attending will receive a free CD with compliments of the band. The new EP will be available for purchase on for download (and possibly physical copies) on Bandcamp.

It is in our hometown Aberdeen, Scotland and we will be supported by local bands Full Fat (blues rock) and Margaret Finlayson (acoustic) who are brilliant.

Here's the official event page with full details:

Thanks very much,

Dude, this is so catchy! I've had this tune stuck in my head since I downloaded it from the Triple J radio thingy. I remember when you posted Little White Lies on here a wee while back and loved that too. Got a question, are you going to put up some 'live' videos any time soon? Would love to hear you guys live but there are no buses to Australia from Scotland...

Keep it up!

I recently stumbled across this on Youtube a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty awesome. Does anyone have any information on this festival gig?

One thing I did notice was that there were lots of buttons above the keys on the piano, suggesting it could have been an electric piano(?) From the surroundings it looked like a horrid day of weather so maybe they used an electric one so that any damage would not be as bad compared to an acoustic if it got wet.

Also, anyone got the setlist for this concert?

Musical discovery / Due Return - Newly recorded songs
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:07:29 PM »
Hi there,

I play bass (and piano in my songs) in a band called Due Return. It is a 6 piece alt-rock band in Aberdeen. We have recently finished recording 6 songs which are to be released over the next few months. There is a lot of piano in these songs so I figured you guys might be interested in having a listen.

Here is our Soundcloud which has all the songs we have recorded:

My song, 'Sweet Lucy' has a music video which can be seen here (it has a piano solo at the beginning!) -

...and if you enjoyed all that, here is our Facebook page:

Apologies for the shameless plug....

I suppose this is the closest thing we have yet, just an audience video. It's pretty much the whole show:

I love how Robert is using his Les Paul again - such a beautiful bass.

When I first got into Ben Folds Five (about 3 years ago) I really didn't like Brick. Partially because I never really knew what it was about, and seemed too different to everything else on my WAEA cd. I was genuinley like, "why would they play something like this when they can just thrash out Kate, Pyser, Fair and OAD. Then again, I really loved Cigarette....oh gawd teenage years. Only 1.5 months left of it haha

I really this has been bootlegged!

(continued from title) , Alicia Witty and Amanda Palmer.

Ben said on the red carpet that he is going to do a side-project involving Tim Minchin, Amanda Palmer and Alicia Witty.

I am not sure when it is going to happen and not sure what the other pianists' tour dates are like but I would imagine it would be this year. However, I am really excited about this especially with Tim Minchin and his humour.

I would have liked to see Jamie Cullum a part of this project as he is clearly a devoted fan of Ben's and has publically stated this (and even spoke to him about it! In fact, both Cullum and Tim Minchin had Folds tracks when they appeared on the BBC's Dessert Island Disc series with Kirsty Young.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

I checked setlist fm and it didn't have any songs in it. Maybe a more knowledgable person on the board would be able to share their wisdom on such matters and enlighten us?

I would imagine that their setlist would have been a lot more substantial than these two songs due to how big they were in Japan and the fact it is a festival where they would probably have had at least 30 mins to one hour. Perhaps this is the only surviving footage and the rest was scrapped by the broadcasters?

Not sure if this is new fottage to be released but I've never seen it before and thought I would share it with you all.

I haven't finished watching it all yet but has some great camera angles of the guys upclose. Also, Darren's got some neat sunglasses.

EDIT: It's Jackson Cannery and Song For The Dumped, along with arguably the longest stool throw??

There has been talk of a new album over the last month or 2. Ben has stated that it could be a more jazz-orientated record (possibly instrumental??) They do seem to be playing a lot of jazzy improvs during their shows this year.

Folds notes that the group tends to "mix everything in one album stylistically," but looking beyond the 10 songs that appear on "The Sound..." he also sees the possibility for a more specialized release. "There's a lot of different albums to make at any given moment, and ('The Sound...') seemed to glow the most. We've got another of these kind of albums in us, but we may also be able to make an EP of fairly jazzy material. When I say 'jazzy,' not like complex jazzy -- more like Ramsey Lewis Trio jazzy. We have that sound, just some really fun, groovy things that we were doing. They had vocals but were more about being instrumental in some ways. So we might do something like that."

Does anyone have any video footage of the Glasgow show? All of the songs are on youtube, except for 'Missing The War', 'Alice Childress' and 'Thank You For Breaking My Heart'. I am collating them in a video as a private memento of the gig (personal usege for my brother and I, not going to post it on the internet). Let me know if anyone does.
