Ben's Old Five / 11/21/99 Belgium
« on: December 01, 2014, 12:33:13 PM »
Hey y'all,

I was wondering if anyone had a copy of the 11/21/99 BFF show in Belgium. It's a bootleg that's been floating around here and there for a good while now, but I've actually never heard the whole thing. Last night, I found an old DVD copy of the April 1999 BFF show in London that was taped for VH1 ... what an incredible era for the band.

If anyone has 11/21/99 and can upload MP3s, I'd be much obliged. Thanks y'all!

I was unexpectedly given a front row seat to this show by a friend who won them from a radio station. Having missed the boat on BF5 and subsequently seen Ben about 7 times over the past 8 or 9 years, I was excited to finally see the original lineup.

I was expecting a much more raucous performance, but it was still a fun time. None of the guys seemed particularly thrilled to be there. A train passed by incredibly close to the stage and interrupted the end of "Alice Childress", and it seemed to genuinely startle Ben, who then aborted the ending of the song and started playing 1920s railroad piano music. Though it was a pretty memorable moment, Ben was speechless afterward, and it seemed to drain the energy out of the set. He then told stories of in his less responsible days, he would have the roadies surprise him with pyrotechnics, and that the train scared him more than any of the pyrotechnics ever did.

1 Philosophy
2 Robert Sledge (improv song)
3 Michael Praytor, Five Years Later
4 Alice Childress (incl. railroad piano music)
5 Erase Me
6 Sky High
7 Brick
8 Do It Anyway
9 Landed
10 Underground
11 Song For The Dumped
12 Army

Bummed that the set was so short, and that "Narcolepsy" failed to appear. 3 songs from the 1st album is pretty decent, though. Aside from being unbelievably close & watching Ben's fingers, the jams were probably the most intriguing part of the show for me. Ben seemed to start to play the chord progress to "The Ascent of Stan" before starting "Underground". I though it was in pretty poor taste for Ben to play "Landed" and have the band back him up, it just didn't seem to belong. I enjoyed the new material live much more than the studio recordings, I'll probably check out the new live album.

Overall, it was fun, but I feel like I saw a pretty low-key show from the dudes. I might see them again if they were the sole headliner; I got out as fast as I could when Barenaked Ladies started playing. Guster, on the other hand, was pretty entertaining, and their music seems to have held up better against the test of time than BNL.

Beamer--check out ben's webpage. It says Amelia is from the Mitch Easter Sessions 2000. I don't how far the guys got on that last record. It would be interesting to learn a bit more about it. I heard Morgan Davis, Losing Lisa and a few titles tossed around. I'm guessing they decided to use someone (Mitch) other than Caleb for the 4th album? Never heard any of those demos (Food Court in there?).

Hot damn! Didn't see that before, thanks for the heads up. I dig the number of demos that are included, as well as the tracks from the unreleased version of the first BFF album.

Is there any insight into what will be included on the "Free Folds Five" EP / Ben Folds 55 Vault thing, beyond the few tracks they have listed on Ben's site? That's almost just as exciting. Glad he's emptying the vaults.

Wow, I haven't posted here in ages. I caught wind of new BFF and came out of hibernation.

"House" doesn't do it for me, honestly. Way too much like "Landed" for me to consider it an actual Ben Folds Five song, in production and song structure. It's silly, but I might like it much better if I knew it was an old song re-recorded, rather than a new tune. The ending is pretty alright, especially when Ben's voice is double tracked, he hardly does that anymore.

"Tell Me What I Did" fairs much better, and while I enjoy Ben singing it better than Robert (sorry Robert), I liked the slightly slower tempo of the old version to the new sped-up version. I'm not sure the synth sits right with me, either. But, still way cool.

I'm the most excited for "Amelia Bright" ... anyone know if it's the old scrapped 4th album studio version, or a new one? Either way. Nice to see "Breakup At the Food Court" will see the light of day, that's a treat, though it looks like it's not with BFF.  With "Losing Lisa" on the rarities disc, I predict that it'll be the rumored BFF studio version from back in the day. Same with "Wandering," isn't there supposed to be a BFF studio version of that too? It was recorded for a movie, it ended up in the movie as a short clip w/ dialogue over it, but didn't make the soundtrack.

This is all pretty exciting that we may hear some extra BFF stuff from deep in the vaults.

Hey fellow Suburbians,

I make my own music, and I finally found a way to put my 2nd album on the interweb for free download.  FREE.  I sincerely hope you'll all check it out and hopefully enjoy it.  I worked pretty hard and had a blast making this record.

Hey, does anyone have a recording of this show? I realize it probably would have shown up long ago if anyone actually did but it never hurts to ask. :) I was there but I forgot to flip the little hold switch on my recorder and bumped the stop button before the show even started. Didn't even think to look at the recorder since I had the show on my mind at the time lol!

Man, that sucks, I hate recording problems.  I taped a crazy show Ben played in Orono .. awesome setlist and everything, but the external mic came unplugged out of the recording device, so I ended up taping the show from the built-in mic from the device - in my pocket.  Very muddy recording, to say the least.

I know some folks on here follow Ms. Amanda Palmer, especially with Ben producing her last album.  Last night I saw her play that was based on Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, and I just thought I'd let you know that it was pretty awesome.

Well, the Subrubs chat must've stirred up Mr. Folds.  According to my friend, via text message, Ben & the gang just busted out "Jackson Cannery" in Maine tonight.  Hopefully my friend isn't drunk and accidentally listening to his iPod instead of Ben's set.

Yeah that was a lot of fun.  I agree, the 100 person mark was the kiss of death.  It was really fun at first when there were less people, but what can you do.  All the credit in the world for Mr. Ben doing this for us, I can't thank him enough.  And hats off to Andy & Allison for spearheading this whole thing.

From what I gathered, there's less of a chance of the Reinhold Messner reissue happening than I originally thought.  But, it sounds like there are a lot of FAKE songs from the Reinhold era.  Ben said something about how they all lied during interviews of that era, and when journalists came into the studio, they would just record fake songs.  So IF the reissue were to happen, these fake tunes would most likely be included.  Ben seemed more content with the masters of the reunion show rather than the Reinhold reissue project.

Ooh, remind me to ask if "Wandering" was ever recorded with The Five/Darren.  I remember there being some other version in a movie or something, I'd like to hear the full version someday.
