General Board / Uh oh, Andy is messing with stuff
« on: September 17, 2015, 02:20:28 AM »
Hey all,

Stats (and common sense) suggest that most people are hitting the site from mobile devices these days, so most of you are likely aware how badly the site layout sucks on the small screen.

Well, I'm doing something about it. I've made some small tweaks to hopefully make it a lot nicer to use when on the bus or the john or wherever you want to get your Ben on.

So far the news page and the boards should look better. If I break anything then shout at me and I'll fix it up. Similarly, if something has always been truly broken and you'd like it not to be, let me know and I'll see what I can do about it.

Album Board / The Sound of the Life of the Mind - What do you think?
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:39:18 AM »
It's finally here! We've been waiting for this since it was first mentioned around the time of the Retrospective, and many have been resisting the streaming previews until they got the album in its entirety.

So now you can hear it - what do you think? Was it what you were expecting? Can you hear anything of their solo efforts? And is the BFF magic still there?

Share your thoughts!

General Board / Photos of the Folds
« on: August 01, 2012, 04:00:17 AM »
So while randomly googling for those Silverman images, I came across a photo that lead me to this site:

It documents how a guy's passion for photography lead him to become Ben's official photographer, taking images for "Ben Folds Live" and a bunch of promo ones. He also has some of them up to browse though. Pretty cool.

News / Be a part of theSuburbs release #2!
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:44:30 AM »
Creative people of theSuburbs: I require your help.
I am working on a little something, and would like you to be involved.

Essentially, I'd like you to look through Ben's photography from the liner notes of "Songs for Silverman". You know - all those black and white photographs he published around that time. After that, I want you to take that inspiration and go out into your local neighbourhood and capture a photograph from the bit of the world you're from. It doesn't have to be fancy - use any camera you've got. Film, DSLR, mobile phone... doesn't matter. Use what you've got. Just capture something in your neighbourhood.

Then email it to me. My email address is up there on the top right: "Email Andy". I'm going to give you 2 weeks to do this - get them to me by August 14th.

What do I want them for? Well I'm keeping that close to my chest, but it is Folds related (completely unofficial), and will be released exclusively via this site later this year.

Have fun!  \m/

Presumably the Ben Folds Five album! Hoorah!

General Board / IMPORTANT: User Registration
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:06:53 AM »
Due to the current wave of spam attack which is appearing faster than we can clear it, I have temporarily turned off new user registration until the spiders go elsewhere or I find a better way to prevent it.

Sadly, they appear to be using bots to find the site, then ping off the human verification (CAPTCHA/anti-spam questions about BFF) to a person to help the bots through.

I have no idea why they think they can sell Ugg boots to us via mispelled spam linking to russian sites, but until I can stop them, no more user registrations.

If you want to join, shoot me an email (top right) and I'll make you an account.

General Board / Ben Folds + Tim Minchin
« on: October 21, 2011, 06:57:21 AM »
Not that I want to blow this out of proportion, but Ben and Tim Minchin just both responded to someone on twitter saying they should get together.
Can imagine it happening in the short term due to Ben's other commitments, but how cool would it be?

If you've not come across Tim Minchin before, give him a google - there's plenty on YouTube to get a flavour.

Album Board / Alternative 'Vault' track ordering
« on: October 11, 2011, 11:12:33 AM »
We're mostly music nerds here - why not go all "High Fidelity" and post up your own ordering for the Vault tracks? Chronological, autobiographical, The order you saw them in live - or just whatever sounds good.

General Board / Ben Folds Facts!

Just to let you all know that to celebrate the release of the Retrospective, I'm tweeting out various Ben Folds Facts over on our twitter account:

Hopefully there's be at least one or to that you superfans didn't know :D

General Board / Digital pianos
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:59:27 AM »
After - ooo - 13 years of happiness with my Casio CPS-7 (including using it for all the transcriptions I've ever posted) I've finally decided to upgrade to a digital piano with weighted keys.

I mostly use as a midi controller, and I'm on a budget. I've found the Casio CDP-100 which looks unbeatable for £300. It also seems quite popular and the inbuilt piano samples aren't bad.

Seeing as a lot of you guys play, anyone got any recommendations for me? Ideal budget around the £300 mark but could stretch for something compelling.

General Board / What will you buy the "Retospective" album for?
« on: August 25, 2011, 06:22:11 AM »
I assume most of you will be picking this up, and I can probably guess which of the above options will get the fewest votes - but which will get most?

General Board / Spamtasia
« on: August 10, 2011, 05:51:42 AM »
Apologies for the run of spam. Sadly the bots seem to line up with times when I'm asleep or at work.
I've just installed some extra spam protection to prevent them signing up, so that should hopefully stem it. I've not managed to work my way through all the previous registered spam bots though, so I'll gradually swat them as I find time.

As always, do keep hitting the 'report spam' button as - if nothing else - it alerts me that there's cleanup to be done.
