Yay for The Luckiest. At least he added a little variety with that.

I'm really curious as to the complete lack of variance in the setlists  Heck even when he was doing Symphony shows, the list would vary some from city to city.

I'm 13 years old, so I'm going to have a short list, but still the concerts will be awesome!

Frank Turner w/ Flogging Molly - An awesome rock concert that I might be seeing soon.

LOVE Frank Turner and if you get to go, you will totally enjoy yourself.

Prince's death yesterday reminded me that there may have been a thread on this topic here from years ago.  Make that YEARS AGO.

While his 1984 show may no longer make my top 5, it's still easily top 10.

As I was reflecting on his passing, I realized that in a 6 week window in the fall of 1984, I saw Prince at the height of the Purple Rain era and Springsteen at the height of the Born in the USA madness.  In retrospect, that was a pretty good fall.

I was wondering why this resurfaced or if it was because of: https://twitter.com/BenFolds/status/724663241700446208

The resurfacing had nothing to do with Ben's tweet which I hadn't seen and everything to do with my remembering that I had posted my list here a LONG time ago and that it had included a Prince concert.

On the 19th anniversary of our first time seeing Ben [with the Five at the long-ago-shuttered Urban Art Bar], my wife and I caught Ben's show with yMusic this past Saturday night on the campus of the University of Houston. It was our 16th time to see him in one iteration or another and I've got to say it was our least favorite show....and that whatever I'd rank 15th [probably opening for John Mayer in 2007] would be way ahead.

There was very little energy from the stage, from the audience, from anywhere.  His two symphony shows here [2006 and 2014] each had way more energy and enthusiasm.  And if I'm not mistaken, this was just the 3rd show of the current tour. Very disappointing.

Here's the setlist:
Beautiful Mechanical (yMusic)
So There
Long Way to Go
Not a Fan
My Philosophy (improvisation after someone called out "My Philosophy"; not to be confused with him actually playing "Philosophy")
Effington
Free Bird (improvisation)
Iím Not the Man
Phone in a Pool
Mess
Music in Circles (yMusic)
Evaporated
Erase Me
Song for the Dumped
Capable of Anything
Rock this Bitch
Stevenís Last Night in Town
You Donít Know Me

ENCORE
Army
Not the Same

Thought the show was last night, the 16th, which made it the 14th anniversary of his first post-BFF show at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA.

Here's an article about the show from dfw.com:

That was a nice review from someone who really seems to understand Ben and his audience.  Thanks for posting it.

No Philosophy??

Interesting that he played cigarette [aka FJ Part 1] right before FJ Part 2.  Did he talk about that or just play them back-to-back.

Would have enjoyed hearing OAD in Houston, but I got Gracie and Boxing so am content.

Okay for some comments and thoughts on the above show, which was delayed by one night due to Tropical Storm Bill.  Thankfully both Ben and the HoB had the opening.

1.  It was our 15th Ben show--5 BFFs and 10 in various configurations including our 2nd with only Ben on stage with piano.
2.  The crowd was lighter than his last HoB show here in May 2010--some undoubtedly weather related.
3.  Maybe his symphony shows have affected his "timeliness" of coming on stage, but for an 8 p.m. show, he walked out at 8:01 p.m.
4.  His son Louis [and two of his friends] sat off to the side of the stage behind Ben.  They came out when Ben was going to play Still Fighting It.  He polled the crowd To Tell The Truth style to see how many could correctly ID Louis.  I'd say it was about 50 for Louis and 25/25 for the other two.  The three took a selfie which Ben photobombed flipping them off.  You can find it by searching #benfolds on Instagram.  He was then too tickled to do the song just then, but came back to it a couple of songs later.
5.  It was kinda fun to hear Hiro, but it was really rusty.  Be interesting to know how long it's been since he played that one live.
6.  His story leading into Phone in a Pool was pretty funny, throwing in a couple of Ke$ha references for good measure. Was a little surprised that we only got 2 songs off the upcoming album.
7.  I could live the rest of my life without hearing Bitches Ain't Shit again, but for a segment of the crowd it seemed to be popular.
8.  Folks were yelling requests early and often.  He joked that he would play some things that were already on his planned list and we would think he was honoring our requests.
9.  While I didn't get Emaline [now 2 for 15], we did get a great performance of Boxing.  He referenced it was the only one of his songs that's been covered by another artist [Bette Midler]. I realized as I had made my list above initially that I had left Boxing out.  I inserted it where I believe it was played.  It was definitely after Zak and before Selfless because we were standing center back during those 5 [6 if you include the Freebird snippet].
10.  I had read about the U of Miami drum in the lake story.  I knew some of the backstory of Army, but had never heard him tell the story leading into singing the song.  The crowd horn section was terrific.
11.  I absolutely loved hearing Gracie. A dear friend of mine died 5 years ago. He has 2 boys and 1 girl. Her name: Gracie, who will turn 12 this fall. Tears came streaming down as he played the first few notes. Special to me.
12.  When he came back for the encores, he said he would play two ballads followed by one song where he pounded the piano and threw things. I knew that meant SFTD as the closer and hoped it would mean The Luckiest as one of the two ballads. Terrific encore though I'm sure some missed the Not the Same choral parts.
13.  He finished up just about 10:25.  It was a tremendous show.
14.  As we started walking out, the female of a younger couple [pretty much could include any couple there] turned to give me a high five commenting that my wife and I had really seemed into the show. At 55, that made me feel a little younger.  However, this morning, my body is telling me that I am every day of 55 and then some.
14.  AND....at one point when talking about the new album, he said while it was hard to explain, we'd all have to come out in January to hear him play with yMusic!!  Now whether that was a Houston-specific January reference, or just an indication that another fuller tour will begin in January, either way....wooooohooooo.
15.  With Louis and his friends in tow, with our bodies aching and with the tour bus nowhere in sight as we got down to street level, my wife and I decided to forego the hunt for the chance to meet and greet and instead walked home.
