Ben talks about the Folds sound on Broadway
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:25:53 AM »
Ben talks with Yes Broadway about some of the various people creating musicals on modern Broadway who have credited Ben's music as an inspiration.  In particular, they discuss Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton and Benj Pasek's Dear Evan Hansen.

There is also a mention of what he's doing next:

"He’s thinking of his next project - perhaps an album, or finishing the book he’s been writing. But the seed has been planted. As Ben Folds says, 'I enjoy [Broadway] and I have so many friends in these things and one day when I grow up I’m going to make one.'"
A one-hit wonder with no hits...

Hey, that's Oh-Ned-Er!

I'd love to see a Folds musical. I feel like he's flirted with the idea a bunch of times. Vague memories of something with Ben Elton (bullet dodged probably), and a radio interview where he mentioned something about Michael Stipe proposing something to him, a musical adaptation of that movie 'Saved' possibly. Anybody else remember any of this?

And there was that 24 Hour Musical thing, 'Losing It'. But a recording of that never surfaced right?

I can see why he's cautious though, serious potential for it to go wrong.

Ben's friends have been writing musicals - so hopefully that's inspiring. (Sara B and Tim Minchin notably, and Josh Groban just starred in one as well).

I saw a one act play entirely based on Annie Waits way way way back in like 2006 at a college theater conference. I've been dreaming of one ever since.
