News / Re: Ben talks about the Folds sound on Broadway
« on: April 24, 2017, 07:02:35 AM »
I'd love to see a Folds musical. I feel like he's flirted with the idea a bunch of times. Vague memories of something with Ben Elton (bullet dodged probably), and a radio interview where he mentioned something about Michael Stipe proposing something to him, a musical adaptation of that movie 'Saved' possibly. Anybody else remember any of this?

And there was that 24 Hour Musical thing, 'Losing It'. But a recording of that never surfaced right?

I can see why he's cautious though, serious potential for it to go wrong.

They even looked at each other once
Across a crowded bar
He was with Martha
She with Tom
Neither of them really knew
What was going on
Strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronised
Staying that way forever
But most of the time
It was just near misses
Air kisses
Once in a book store
Once at a party
She came in as he was leaving
And years ago at the movies
She sat behind him
Six thirty showing
Of While You Were Sleeping
Never once looked around

It's so easy from above
You can't really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk
Past them every day
Oh no

And it's not like they were actually ever unhappy in the lives they lived
He married Martha
She married Tom
Just this vague notion that something was wrong
An ache, an absence, a phantom limb
An itch that could never be scratched

It's so easy from above
You can't really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk
Past them every day
Oh no

Neither of them knew what was going on
The strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronised
Staying that way forever

And who knows whether that's how it should be
Maybe a ghost lives in that vacancy
Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones

It's so easy from above
You can't really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk
Past them every day
Oh no

Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones

So she stands and waits
And waits at the school gate
They're late. They come, so dumb
In two cars when they agreed one.
And it's gone wrong on her birthday

So they go to Joes
For pizza and ice cream
They sit and stare and Claire
Just wants to be nine and a half
Next year she'll tell them she only wants world peace

But Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside of
Some of the stuff, the best of us
That we can't get out

What's the point of this?
What's wrong with your birthdays?
It's cool at school, her friends
They all have two birthdays
Oh jeeze he just asked the waitress out on a date on her birthday

But Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside of
Some of the stuff, the best of us
That we can't get to

Here's the check
They pay with two cards like they've never met
Goodbye
Outside, it's cold in LA

Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside of
The best of us; for most of us
You're what we were; you're all that's left
It used to be our birthday too

News / Re: Ben on UK Radio 2 this Saturday

Claire's 9th is a real grower I think. Lot's of lovely detail in the story. The lyrics are fantastic.

The other song was called From Above which also has really nice lyrics, but it's not hard to know how good it'll sound on the record as it was a haphazard performance with Ben on guitar and Nick Hornby speaking one of the verses and over one of the choruses (he doesn't on the recording). It's a good tune, but it'll be interesting to see what the final product is like.

Has anybody asked about that musical Ben has mentioned a few times?  I can remember two interviews, one where he mentions that Michael Stipe asked him to do one and a second where he said he'd be working on it this July.  I don't have 30 dollars right now BUT if any of you kind PFoJ members would like to submit a question on the subject that'd be amazing.  And when I have a spare 30 dollars, I'll join - promise.  Thankee.
