Positive, but no rating, from The National:

No rating, Blogcritics:

And then there's this very candid interview from Billboard that seems like he did while he was tipsy.  My review of that is an A+ for entertainment, since he comes off as total dick in it, which seems like the angle they thought would be the easiest to go for given the content he provided.

Glad to see good reviews.

His promise of keeping that beard if that album charts seems funny though...the album comes out on a Friday, not much time to sell in the charts. Willing to bet he knew this!

Drunk, fiery Ben is funny and blunt. Good stuff.
A one-hit wonder with no hits...

Hey, that's Oh-Ned-Er!

Fun Fact: Charting has little to do with LEGITIMATE sales. It has to do with units shipped. I mean iTunes can have it's play... and technically streaming counts a bit too. Also, with all albums worldwide coming out on Fridays now the Billboard Charts have accommodated this.

Quote
Starting July 10, the official street date for all new album releases will be Friday (instead of the current Tuesday) in the United States. For all sales-based charts (ranking both albums and tracks), Billboard and Nielsen will change the chart reporting period to cover the first seven days of an album's release. This will result in an adjusted sales period of Friday to Thursday, as opposed to the Monday to Sunday cycle that has been utilized since the advent of Nielsen Music's point-of-sales tracking in 1991.

If you read between the lines (or some of the actual lines), it sounds like a mid-life crisis in progress unfortunately.

I was thinking the same thing. Yes, its funny and all, but you can't fake everything he said. Ben has always been a hero of mine in a sense, I've always looked forward to hearing his views on things. His sharp mind that fuels his songs is just as interesting in a standard interview, and I've taken a lot of his "wisdom" in as part of myself. I hope he's doing well.

Allmusic gives it 4/5 stars, the first Ben release to score that high since Silverman:

That or he's takin the piss out of everything. Over the years I've learned not to make assumptions on what could be inferred. He also talks about losing his sense of ego - which could well be a factor to a personality change.

I've been sensing a pattern, whether it be the article about him and relationships (I think there was a line in there about him saying he's failed at pretty much everything he's tried), the story behind Phone in a Pool, playing with a cup of liquor on his piano (and not immediately noticing it was falling on his keyboard), or the Billboard article.  I hope it's not the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if he reaches a breaking point of some sort in the near future.
