Does anyone have an mp3 of an Army radio edit? I'd love to play it on my radio show. Thanks!

Tour Board / Ben in Northwest? What?
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:39:26 PM »
Don't know if it's really been confirmed yet, but I was looking at an events calendar for the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Or, and at the very bottom of the page it listed Ben for 5/15/09.

Oh god do I want this to be true. I haven't REALLY seen Ben and the boys since 2005 (also at the Roseland).

They're like a Scottish matt pond pa/Okkervil River.
I like the song The Modern Leper. It's pretty much heartbreakingly great.

The song I like the most isn't on there, but it's worth checking out, imo.

Holy crap. If you haven't heard The Weakerthans, you're missing out. They are really good. Especially the lyrics.

So, uh, here's a link to their myspace, but you should really listen to the album Left and Leaving (more importantly, the title track from it) because in my opinion, it's their best.

News / Folds singing Lee song(s)?
« on: November 08, 2007, 07:04:21 PM »
So says Ben Lee's blog:

"The creative juices are flowing at the moment.

Im currently working on 3 albums! One is the album "A Mixtape from Ben Lee" which will finally be completed in Dec of this year. Im hoping it will be out early 08. Its about 15 new songs I've written, each sung by a different singer. Some wonderful people involved like Neil Finn, Kylie Minogue, Ben Folds, the eels, Gomez, Ash, Nina Persson, Zooey Deschanel, Sean Lennon, Maria Taylor, New Buffalo, Sleepy Jackson and lots more. This album has been my personal "Apocalypse Now!" taking me about 5 years to finish. Its gonna feel good to finally get it out."

for his entire blog:

Looks like it should be good. Something more to look forward to in early 08!

I just discovered this great band from London today. They use a lot of piano, and it's just really good indie pop music.

Go listen.

I'm interviewing this band on Wednesday, and they ain't too bad. They're from Portland (Oregon) and have the sound that at least I associate with the Northwest. You can listen and download some their songs on their myspace:

I believe the single is "Catch Me Jumping". Go listen. Tell me what ya think!

General Board / What Is Your Favorite Album?
« on: August 10, 2007, 07:42:13 PM »
So, I'm almost certain this has been done before, but I was bored. And also curious, mostly because the answer to this question (for me) has changed recently. My favorite used to be TUBORM, and now it's Self-Titled. So take your pick, and discuss!

So I'm sure a lot of you know this band. They're from the 80s and 90s.
I see them listed as a "College Radio Rock" and "Alternative Pop/Punk" band as far as genres are concerned. I really like them, and I happen to think Paul Westerberg (the lead singer and found of the band) is a genius.
I'd recommend listening to one of their songs called "Can't Hardly Wait". That's the song that got me into them, and hopefully it'll do the same for you.

This isn't an entirely legit myspace account, but that song is on it.

I hope you like it as much as I do.

News / The Bens Re-uniting?!?
« on: July 12, 2007, 07:55:30 PM »
Taken from Ben Lee's new the bold:

Sitting in a house, looking out at the beach, on the east coast of the USA.

I just spent 10 days with my spiritual teacher Narayani Amma, and many worlds were colliding and integrating in fascinating ways. I mixed prayer and meditation ceremonies with stepping outside to discuss video concepts and album artwork on my Blackberry. I looked at tour schedules for the rest of 07 after performing devotional songs for Amma. At one point, I was in a convoy of cars driving him to the airport, and was on the phone live with Australian radio stations launching my new single. I guess this is what Bono calls "riding a wild boar" - believing that all experiences are possible and need not exclude each other. Finding balance and pushing the boundaries.

Last night outside the Mercer Hotel in NY, I bumped into Courtney Love who was rehearsing her new songs with her guitar player on the sidewalk. She talked a mile a minute about her new record, the secret billionaires that she wants to marry, how she assembled her new band, what makes a great drummer, why she's not allowed in the Hamptons anymore, and lots and lots of other things. She dissed her last record quite heavily and was a bit shocked that I could quote back to her all the lyrics to "But Julian, I'm a little bit older than you". I'm fascinated by Courtney and always have been. I'm intrigued to hear this new album. She always gives pop culture a shake up. I'm glad she's still doing it.

OK, here's some gossip for you...there have been some VERY PRELIMINARY talks between the fine gentlemen known collectively as The Bens about getting together sometime before the years end to record some new tunes. That's all I can say for now. Fingers crossed that the stars align themselves in order for it all to happen.

The new single "Love Me Like the World is Ending" should be up on myspace any minute now, so check it out when you've got a minute. Some of you will love it, some will hate it, and some may try to wear it as a sock (this is unadvisable...mp3s do not work very well as footwear). Anyway, have a listen and see what you feel (footnote: always avoid "thinking" about music if possible, it never helps).

Lots of tourdates to come soon.
Be prepared.

Big love

Good news, ya?

So, uh, this guy is really good. He has a song that mentions Ben Folds called "Good and Bye (Home)". The lyric is the opening line that says, "here's to Ben Folds and car drives".

I really like his music. You can tell that he's definitely influenced by like Bright Eyes and The Rocket Summer, and even Ben Lee at times. Also a little Tilly & the Wall. I don't know. I just really like him, and I think he's worth checking out.

here's his website:

and his myspace...:

The song that got me into him was "Technicolor Eyes", so definitely listen to that one.

Tour Board / first night of john mayer tour 6/1
« on: June 02, 2007, 05:14:36 PM »
First the setlist, then my review.

Theme from Dr. Pyser
All U Can Eat
Still Fighting It
*corndog improv (rock this bitch for john mayer)
You To Thank (changing some words--like, "and the corn dogs were sold out")
**Bitches Ain't Shit
Shit note on synth
Such Great Heights
Kate (!)
***Not the Same

So, it's not like I was expecting much. Ben played a good hour and about 10 minutes, and he was top notch. However, the sound was terrible for him, and the piano was out of tune. But of course when Mayer plays, the sound is remarkable. Anyway, the crowd was absolutely terrible. Seriously, they were so disrespectful to Ben.

*This is the RTB improv he did about people leaving to get corndogs during his set. It was hilarious.

**This was an extended version of Bitches Ain't Shit. Of course all the little teenage Mayer fans giggled when he mentioned Dr. Dre. When Ben wanted us to sing "bitches can't hang with the streets", I felt like it was just my brother and I singing. It sucked. There was no energy what-so-ever from the crowd. They were just talking amongst each other, and getting in-and-out of their seats the entire time.

***Kind of the same story as BAS--nobody sang the harmonies. And afterwards, when Ben was exiting the stage, everyone just stopped cheering as soon as he walked off, so there was no encore.

Anywho, I felt that this kind of environment was the complete opposite of what Ben shows are supposed to be like. First off, it was a sit-down show. Secondly, it was a huge venue. And thirdly, it was John Mayer--and his fans suck. There was no audience participation at all. I was so upset with the crowd, that I couldn't think of watching John with them, so I walked out and hung out with some other pissed-off Ben fans.

I thought Ben and the boys played very well, but everything else sucked. I feel bad that Ben has to put up with this for rest of the tour. Sorry, guys. It just wasn't that great...

P.S. Yes, he played Kate. And it was incredible.
