Decline in theSuburbs.org.uk?
« on: November 14, 2007, 01:47:29 PM »
I'm not trying to kick up a fuss or irritate anyone, I just wanted to make an observation.

I've been reading on this forum for maybe three years plus now and posted sporadically about a year or two ago. I know this doesn't exactly make me a veteran of the site and I don't claim to be harking back to some Golden Age.

So what I want to ask is, does anyone else feel that the forum's gone a little... lack lustre? I used to love this site and don't get me wrong, I still do like to catch up on stuff and see what people have to say, it just seems a little different. I wouldn't for a moment say that the maintenance was poor - seriously, a shout out to the moderators is in order- but I do have a theory on why things seem a little low.

Does it feel like there's a slight decline in the way of Ben Folds news? I'm excited about the news of studio- time as much as the next Folds fan BUT I'm greedy and want something more! Hopefully, I'm right and in which case I'm sure everything will be right as rain once again, soonish.

Could I please appeal to people and ask them not to just respond really angrily and telling me that I'm 'slagging of the 'burbs' or whatever. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just asking people if they agree with me at all

and

if they have noticed a decline at all, why do they reckon it's happened?

Sorry to give you an essay of sorts and please believe me when I say I'm not trying to get anyone pissed off at all, I just wanted to hear what people thought.

Yeah, I think it's mainly because Ben hasn't really been up to anything much news-wise, but once he starts playing more shows and releasing things, this site will ignite. I'm nearly positive. It's just a waiting game.
My new philosophy is that a crappy tape deck somewhere plays a greatest hits collection of strange and tender moments, lost, stranded, and forgotten. I'll meet you there.

Cool, well I'm glad my sentiments are shared kind of. Chloe you managed to summarise nicely what I waffled about for ALOT of lines. I waffle. BIG TIME.

I know. The only Ben "news" is that he's playing that festival. His website finally added all three shows we know about to it's page. Though, interesting thing, the Exit/In has someone else scheduled the day Ben's apparently playing. Yeeeep.

HAHAHAHAHA I have not seen someone/heard someone say "ME WANT HONEYCOMBS" in a very long time. Are those commercials still on? Is that cereal still manufactured?

I know the cereal is still out there, I just had a bowl the other day. However, haven't been to Nickelodeon for awhile so I don't know about the commercials.

It's always been peaks and troughs. When Ben's not up to much, the tumbleweed moves in. When he's out on tour, we get a little 'keepy-uppy' going on as various people attend shows and filter stuff back. Just before a new CD comes out, we all go mad with speculation and such and I'm practically updating every day with new info.

Maybe the question should not be if there's a decline in the site, but a decline in Ben? Dun dun DUNNNN!

Whilst I am a big Ben Folds fan, I am certainly not in the league of a lot of people here, so I dont profess to be an expert on the subject, buuuuuuuuuuuut......

To me, Ben seems quite different to a lot of major artists. He is clearly very successful, has a big fan base and is well respected by the industry. He has 'made it', and yet to a lot of people he is completely unknown. He is not a celebrity in any form. I know he promotes his albums, but even that is relatively low-key usually and I expect goes unnoticed by most people other than this fans. When he's not giving us news, there is no news. It's not like Britney where we can follow whatever he's doing. This is a good thing, and I'm amazed and impressed with the level of respect for Ben's private life that people have on here. I dont think that should change, but it does limit us somewhat as to what we can talk about.

Yes, Ben has a brilliant personality but he's not about gimmicks, and so when there's no music to talk about (which there isn't right now) what else are we meant to talk about? I dont think there are too many regular users on here so conversation gets a bit stale. Yet I'm sure when he releases new stuff the conversations on here will be dynamite as that's exactly what we all want to be discussing!

It is a shame, but I think it's natural really that there's a dip. Unless we all start talking about completely irrelevant stuff then I imagine the success of the boards are kind of dictated by Ben himself!  :)

just my two cents

I agree:  simply put, if Ben's not doing much, there's not a whole lot to discuss.  And there hasn't been much at all, for months.  Like Andy said, the place'll be buzzing once Ben DOES SOMETHING ANYTHING PLEASE BEN.  I mean, is busy again.  *cough.*

Well said Katebug.

Now if we could just get a picutre of Ben WITH Britney (compromising position a bonus) then you could guarantee a melt-down of discussion for a day or two.
It's easy to be easy and free when it doesn't mean anything...

*emerges from dark cave*
yeah i noticed that there's really nothing to talk about.  to me, i come here to talk about ben, and usually ben lee or kweller or someone else very ben related... but without any ben news i check the website every coupel of days to check for rumors but i don't really post.
nobody deserves posts on their myspace site asking if they stabbed basketballs.
