[LYRICS] The Sound of the Life of the Mind
« on: September 13, 2012, 11:13:52 AM »
I need some help here. There seem to be quite a few probably American references I just can't get. But the bulk is done.
Please feel free to update, tell me where I might be wrong, etc.

Aped's brother wants to beat up Paul
The boys have gone to watch,
Some of the girls are down at the mall,
Justine's got Cherry Cola and scotch,
la da da da

Later on it's everyone round to Bec's
Her parents are away in New York
Sarah, well, she just can't bear
the stupidity, the porn and the grime
She stays at school so that she can hear
the sound of the life of the mind

And it's noisy up there
It rocks like a mother
Rosa Parks and DNA
Joan of Arc and JFK
But it's noisy up there
It rocks like a mother

She's cut 'em all out of her social circle
Won't introduce them to (Lee and or Frost)?
Doesn't wanna let them get to know (possibly Keith R Startz, deceased US politician)
They'll never know what they have lost

But Sarah well she just can't bear
The stupidity the boredom and lying
She stays at school so that she can hear
the sound of the life of the mind

And it's noisy up there
It rocks like a mother
Burning Cuts? and Fortunes Wheel
????? and ?????
But it's noisy up there
It rocks like a mother

Sarah already knows
Pretty soon she'll be leaving
She'll be suited up in whatever she can find
She doesn't want to hear about
pregnancies
foam fights, TV takeouts
have sex, weddings
the sound of the life she'll leave behind

Yeah it's noisy up here
it rocks like a mother
And it's noisy up there
It rocks like a mother

I transcribed it in the "streaming" thread.  Still 2 words I don't know, but otherwise I think its correct (The U.S. History references I'm 100% on).  I'll let you look up their significance rather than explain in another one of my billion-word posts.  BTW, Ben said this song is about author/journalist/NPR personality, Sarah Vowell.  I HIGHLY recommend her work if you haven't read it.  Explores obscure parts of US History with suburb wit and a lot dry humor.

It rocks like a mother

She’s cut ‘em off out of her social circle
Won’t introduce them to Lincoln or Frost
Doesn’t want to let them get to know Keats or Studs Terkel
They’ll never know what they have lost
But Sarah, well she just can’t bear the stupidity, the boredom, the grind

The sound of the life of the mind

And it’s noisy up there (noisy up there)
It rocks like a mother
(Copernicus and Fortune’s Wheel, Plato, ?? and The New Deal)
But it’s noisy up there (noisy up there)
It rocks like a mother

Sarah already knows
Pretty soon she’ll be leaving
But she’s Hoovered up whatever she can find

Pregnancies, foam fights, TV, take-outs
Have sex, weddings

Ah, my apologies, I thought I'd found all the ones people had done already.

I shall have a look.

This is what I got listening through it the other day when the preview was released.  There's only one word I can't make out at all.  It's the name or word after "Plato" sung by Darren and Robert in the second chorus.  Sounds like Blindel or Glendel or something like that.

And, for me, it simply had to be Sara with no 'h'.   ;)

(Noisy up there)
It rocks me like a mother
Oh, ohh, oh, ohh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

She's cut 'em all out of her social circle

Well, she's hoovered up whatever she can find

BTW, Ben said this song is about author/journalist/NPR personality, Sarah Vowell.

The voice of Violet in The Incredibles, eh?  Interesting that Hornby wrote the lyrics about her.  Fits, though.

Not groundbreaking news but finally figured out the one word I couldn't get in the lyrics.

"And it's noisy up there
(Noisy up there)
It rocks me like a mother
Copernicus and Fortune's Wheel
Plato, Glenn Gould, and the New Deal
And it's noisy up there
(Noisy up there)
It rocks me like a mother"
A one-hit wonder with no hits...
