General Board / What a difference a year makes

Anyone remember all the hullabaloo that this thread caused a year ago today?

Or the responses that followed:

General Board / Fighters of Foo Last Night
« on: April 24, 2003, 10:21:59 AM »
Okay, so it's off topic as all get out, but I thought I'd weigh in on the Foo Fighters concert my wife and I saw last night in Houston.  Here's a rough idea of the setlist:

All My Life
The One
My Hero
Times Like These
Up In Arms
Have It All
Enough Space
Stacked Actors
Hey JP
This Is A Call

Learn To Fly
Weenie Beenie

A pretty good mix from their four albums with a slight emphasis on the current disc.  A couple of random thoughts:

1. Dave Grohl rocks, can play the hell out of the guitar and is a very, very funny guy on stage.

2. Ticketmaster sucks (but who didn't know that already?).  I got our tickets during a pre sale and clicked "best available" in the arena seating area.  After checking out the alleged arena setup at Ticketmaster, I determined we would be angled far enough to have a pretty good view.  Instead, we were unable to see anyone in the band other than drummer Taylor Hawkins from our seats because of speaker blockage.  After the second song, we went to the end of the arena and enjoyed the show.

3. If you get a chance to see this show, it would be worth your while.  Tickets are reasonable ($28 plus all the b.s.) and you get a very good show.

4. After viewing the mosh pit from above, my son may have a few years added before I let him get floor tickets.

General Board / Rolling Stone Blurb on the Bens
« on: April 29, 2003, 10:59:20 AM »
Can't find this online or I would've linked, but the new RS magazine has a blurb in its Random Notes section on page 43.

Titled "All About the Benjamins" and with a picture featuring Folds, Kweller and Lee, the note says:

"The idea was like a Scooby-Doo thing," says Ben Lee, describing his bizarro new Crosby, Stills and Nash-style collaboration with fellow singer-songwriters Ben Kweller and Ben Folds.  "It was so crazy, it just might work."  After touring Australia, the Bens now have big dreams of approaching Ben Harper-or Ben Affleck for their video.  As Lee says, "It's an enviable position, to be a Ben."

It's Issue 922, dated May 15, 2003--the 35th Anniversary Special

Everybody needs to wish greyseal a very happy birthday.

I'll start.  Happy Birthday Annie.  Thanks for all you bring to the Ben Folds community.  Hope you have a fantabulous day.

General Board / Father's Day weekend
« on: June 13, 2003, 07:11:01 PM »
Well, it is, at least here in the US.  And I'm reminded of the best piece of advice my dad ever gave me (We mention it often and probably will again this weekend).

It occurred at the end of our three day drive from Houston to Chapel Hill for the beginning of my freshman year at Carolina (freshmen were not allowed to have cars).  I'm sure he had wanted to give me all sorts of sage advice over the course of the drive, but mostly we just listened to the radio.

After we had unloaded all my stuff in the dorm, we went to lunch.  He drove me back to the dorm and as I was getting out to start my college career, this is what he said:

"Don't let school interfere with your education."

How incredibly cool was (and is for that matter) that advice.

General Board / 1000th Post
« on: May 30, 2003, 06:34:07 PM »
Well, I thought about digging up Annie's Ta Daa thread and claiming this land for Spain, but that would have been fairly derivative.

And then I wished that this were yesterday in which case my 1000th post would have been on Bob Hope's 100th birthday, JFK's 86th, my father's 70th and on the 50th anniversary of the first climb to the peak of Mt. Everest.  But alas, twas not to be.

So what am I left with?  Maybe only this:  Thanks for making this such a great place.  I have enjoyed getting to *know* you guys over the last couple of years.  Y'all are a good bunch of folks.

I remember my excitement over finding this site and the build up to the July 16, 2001 Belly Up show.  WOOOHOOO for those of us fortunate enough to have been there.  I remember TIB's long lost Wish Upon a Star thread and the salsa karma story.  There was also the fantastic Not the Same thread.

Then throw in Benvivor, the genesis of with jbj's lost weekend of posting articles, and reading about the various concert adventures of the many members who saw Ben once or eleven times over the last couple of years.

It is a great place.  I appreciate everyone having always made me feel so welcome.  So here's to another 1000 and another after that.

General Board / A lot has happened in two years
« on: July 17, 2003, 11:34:43 AM »
Well, I meant to post this thread yesterday (the 16th), but got stuck in a marathon deposition. So it's today instead.

Two years ago last night, Ben began life after BFF when he nervously came on stage at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.  I was lucky enough to be there (totally by accident since our vacation had previously been scheduled to begin the night before within 15 minutes of the venue). It was really a magical night.

And I recently got to thinking about what a great two years it's been for Ben fans.  To wit:

--Studio Album released 9/11/01
--Live Album released 10/8/02
--EP 1 to be released in less than a week with two more on the way
--210 tour appearances on four continents with more to come beginning next week
--great online communities that have made many of his shows available

Sure there's been some carping among us, but folks this has been a very, very, very good two years for all of us.  Let's enjoy the ride.

General Board / VH-1 Top 100 of last 25
« on: June 11, 2003, 12:21:48 PM »

I'm sure most of you have seen this, but in case not, thought it was of some interest.  I'm fairly surprised that Teen Spirit topped the VH-1 list.  Not surprisingly, no Ben.

~Fan, looking to see if there's a link somewhere with the complete list

News / Kyle's FTP update
« on: February 12, 2002, 11:28:20 AM »
With Andy and Grey's wonderful contributions to downloadable tracks, some may have forgotten Kyle's FTP. While on the .org this a.m., I saw the following and thought I'd pass it along:

Hey Everybody,

I took down the FTP server due to our severe line problems (the connection was resetting about 50 times an hour). We are testing some fixes hopefully they will work. The server's line is currently being used with the FTP to test it. I will put the server back up in a day or two if they work or not. Maybe, I'll even update the site. :-P

News / The Sweetest Thing--Losing Lisa
« on: April 15, 2002, 10:59:07 AM »
So I was watching Hot Ticket with Leonard Maltin Saturday before going out. They're reviewing The Sweetest Thing, that new Cameron Diaz gal-pal movie. They show a couple of scenes and in the background of the last one, there's a song playing.

Yep, Losing Lisa from RTS by none other than our idol Mr. Folds.  Don't know whether it's on the soundtrack (or if there is one for that matter) but still thought it was pretty cool.

News / Ben Plays Elton
« on: April 24, 2002, 09:46:28 AM »
At the Brisbane show on 4/23, Ben's first encore song was Elton John's "Tiny Dancer."  This comes on the heels of Ben having played with Mr. Dwight last week on "The Bitch is Back."  Details of the entire Brisbane set can be found on the setlist thread here:

--Fan, knowing that this kind of news is enough to make grey think about heading to oz.
