News / Re: ben's myspace video

How long we're we there?
Apparently, my friend Todd and I missed the call that said to be there an hour later.
We got to Ben's studio at about 9:30 and the shoot began at about 11.
The film crew were setting up lights and stuff and Ben came in early to discuss some ideas he had for the video.
At least, that is what I gathered from what I could hear. He left and came back about an hour later.
The other extras trickled in up to about 10:30. What I thought was funny, was the first time the fog machines were on, the fire alarm went off and we had to leave the building.

After a lot of takes, we were fed pizza and sodas for lunch, Ben disappeared with Fleur to get lunch. As I mentioned earlier, I stopped Ben and Fleur as they came in from the back parking lot and I told him I really liked his new song and I saw him at Murray State. I can definitely say that Ben seems like such a humble guy and is really appreciative of his fans.
I talked to cat lady briefly, (Emily Fleming... I hope it's okay to give her name...) and I got some good photos of her, which I sent to her to use for publicity (?).

The video shoot came to a close at about 4:55. Ben was still there, and if I remember correctly, Jared and Sam were gone. I was hoping to get a shot of the three of them and maybe get all of their signatures. I did get a photo with Ben and Fleur and Ben signed my Ben Folds Live disc. (I have four autographs from Ben: fan club photo, my "I Love Ben Folds" T-shirt he signed on the heart while I was wearing it, my ticket stub for the Murray concert and the front of the CD I mentioned.) Needless to say, I haven't washed my T-shirt and it hangs in my office with his signature on it. I'm sucha nerd.

If you have seen my link I posted earlier, I have some closeup photos of Ben's piano. He left a pair of glasses, his camera, and Blackberry on the piano on the inside during lunch.
I helped myself and took the liberty of moving his glasses to the keyboard and took some cool photos of his glasses on his piano keys. I most certainly did not mess with his blackberry or camera. I thought someone would scold me for messing with his glasses but no one did. Lucky me, and I got some nice picts.

I really briefly spoke with Fleur. Jared was way cool as so was Sam. Sam posed for me outside the studio and again, I was asked to remove the photos I took outside the studio.
There were tons of hand written lyrics around on his other keyboards and stuff. And I saw tons of CD's that had stuff written in Sharpies that looked like discs Ben made for himself of other takes and stuff.... I had way to much respect for Ben to go snooping through his stuff but that is what I saw without rumaging.

Anyway, check out my photos at:

I'm the first guy from the bottom, midways on the stairs next to a flame. I have glasses on and long hair, lotsa forehead too.
Here is a link to my photos. I had my photo made with Ben and wife, Fleur.
Thanks for asking and visiting my website.

I'm glad to finally see the Cologne video. I think it turned out nicely. I'm happy with the face time I got.
Someone was asking earlier some questions;
The European Guy: I thought he was part of the film crew too, and I assumed the accent was fake.
Cat Lady: I talked to her between shoots and she never mentioned being the children's sitter. Maybe she is, maybe she isn't. She told me she just graduated with a degree in theatre and she, with her parents, live next to Ben. She did say that Ben came to her parent's Christmas party last year. I think she's totally hot too. I got some great picts of her outside the studio. We have corresponded since the video and I wish her well with her career. I plan to watch for her to see if she makes it big.
The Twins: they were there at the beginning of the shoot but did not stick around for long.
The little loft area at the top where Sam and the other guy were had something like a bean bag chair, some other seating, and lots of children's drawings laying around. It looked like a place where children hung out.
The intro with the European was shot at the end of the day, and I think it was about three takes.
The song itself sounds exactly like we heard it during the video shoot.
During lunch break, I saw Ben and Fleur in the parking lot behind the studio and I told him I thought the song was great. He said thanks and I told him I saw him at the Murray, Kentucky gig and he said, "Oh yeah, the one I was late for." He was over an hour late getting to the Murray show because he got lost coming from Nashville. Still a great show and I found a download of it. I would have talked more but he had his lunch in his hands and I didn't want to be an annoying fan.
Anyway... can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I guess everyone has seen the similarities between Hiroshima and Elton John's Bennie and the Jets with the pounding piano beat and fake audience sounds.

Thanks for your comment on my picts. I am glad to share these with everyone. My friend and I, both, took our digital cameras and quite honestly, I didn't think we would be able to use them.
Ben's people got in touch with me and my friend to get our photos. They said they wanted to use them in a non-commercial way and give us credit for them. We ended up uploading our images to them. I hope they use them somewhere. I don't really care about getting paid for them...just the opportunity to have them used is an honor enough.

Jared did say that the song "Cologne" was just finished (like the night or two nights before, I can't remember) as we began practicing for the video. But this leak of "Cologne" is exactly what we practiced to except there was a count-in barely audible at the start of the song.
Believe me when I say that this song "Cologne" is the real deal. My understanding of us being in the video was that it was for a "DVD release". These are Adam's (the fan club manager) exact words to me when we spoke on the phone a few days before the video shoot. With that being said, I am assuming there will be a DVD release of videos.
I don't think anyone would spend the money on a video crew only to say it's not real. Feel free to check out my link of some of the pictures I shot between takes.

My friend Todd was in the video too and his website with photos is:

I had more photos posted outside Ben's studio but I was told I had to remove them. I guess they thought fans would try to find Ben's studio in Nashville.
I had great shots of Ben, Jared, Sam and Ben's manager. We started at around 11 and ended at just before 5.

I also did get to meet Ben's new wife Fleur, spoke to her briefly, (Fleur helped the extras learn to play the piano bit at the beginning and end) and his kids, the twins were there too.
Jared's wife was there with their newborn and Sam's girlfriend/wife (?) was there. There was another guy with his shirt off playing tambourine, who I did not recognize.
Also, there was a beautiful young lady dressed as a cat who was crawling around on the floor amongst the row of pianos during the video... she was shot coming up the stairs behind the choir too.
I did get to talk to her and she said she was Ben's neighbor and had just graduated with a degree in theatre.

Ben had his kids sitting on his lap in front of his piano before we started and was playing some goofy tunes, like he played the Star Wars theme on piano. Later while sitting at the piano, it sounded like he was starting Ray Charles' "Them That Got". One of the other extras started playing chopsticks and Ben chimed in as well but it was really short.

Again, I can't imagine this was all done, spending nearly the entire day shooting this video, only to be fake.

Note: Apparently Ben does do alot of traditional photography as I saw a make-shift darkroom and photo developing equipment laying around.

Hey, I'm new here and I wanted to say on the mysterious new songs, specifically "Cologne", that this is the real deal. I was lucky enough to be in Ben's music video of this song which was shot in his studio in Nashville in June and this is the song we did for his new video.
I am in the background choir. You can see me in the very short video clip on Jared's myspace website as we rehearse the video. I'm the guy with the longest hair.
Also, I took some photos between shoots... here is my link:
or try:

PS I should point out that we had an absolute blast working with Ben, Jared and Sam and the video crew.
