Title: Hiroshima
Post by: cassandra on August 03, 2008, 09:00:34 PM
how does everyone feel about this song?

i am incredibly dissapointed, the ending monologue part is, in my opinion, bad and the crowd noise is the ultimate cheesy way to ruin a song. ben can do better.

not to be a jerk or anything.. i still love this guy

I mean...I love Ben also....but it just seems like the song....hmm....how do I put this... is too easy. Ben's known for complex lyrics and catchy lines...this song is way too simple. I thought the RTB in Berlin was better. haha.

I dunno guys, it is the most listened to song of the new album for me and I do really like it, but the ending really is baws and the crowd noise is just shit but I do really like this song.  It's inredibly catchy and I do walk around all day with an irritating little voice in my head going uh-oh--oh. But yeah its really got its problems this song.

I don't like the fact that it's called "Hiroshima". I know that it's about an event that occured IN Hiroshima, but (sadly) people will always associate Hiroshima with one thing. When Ben said in London that the song was about falling off the stage in Japan and then said it was called Hiroshima, part of the crowd LAUGHED. The Benny Hit His Head subtitle, too, doesn't do much for the song (now it sounds like it's comically named after a terrible tragedy, as well as being an Elton parody...).

I like the song itself now, though. Though the monologue and crowd noise is unnecessary to say the least.

i don't think that's really fair. 9/11 happened in new york, but does that mean that i'm not allowed to laugh at something stupid that happened to my friend there? if you can only ever associate a place with one thing, then germany is still just the nazi country and england is still just the crusaders, and the us is still just the country that bombed japan

When I heard all the live versions I loved it. I think the first version I heard had some sort of awesome piano solos after the last chorus. I'm not the biggest fan of the crowd, but I'll live. I still like the song itself.

This is the only new one so far that I have been playing (my computer is so cr*p) and I kinda like it actually if I am honest. :-*
It is incredibly catchy and my 8 year old son and 12 year old daughter love it and have been singing the 'oh oh oh oh ohs' all day. (Yes this will probably get on my nerves after a while)  :-\
Could be a winner if it was released!!!(?)
However, do we know that this is the actual version that is going to be on the album? The lyrics and spoken bit at the end may change on the album?!
By the way, has anyone seem any presales for the album anywhere yet for the UK?
 :-*

New York was known world-wide for many different reasons before Sept 11, Germany and England are entire countries, not just cities.  Tragically for Hiroshima it was largely an unknown Japanese city before the bombing and it hasn't hit the headlines in a big way since, so I agree with Alex on this one (mark the date people, this doesn't happen often).

And for the record, I dislike Hiroshima (the song, not the city) quite a bit. Far too much channelling Elton - and I like Elton , not enough Ben.

I thought the song was more infectious live. Something about those Oh-oh, oh-OHs.

SPEAKING of which. When we, as the audience, we're being recorded Ben had us scream extra loud after things like... "Tokyo Psycho" and that clearly didn't end up on the album. just sayin.

I like it. I've always really liked it since I freaked out when I realized he was doing the Berlin RtB. Seeing as it was my first REAL Ben Folds show though I might be a little bias.

I don't dislike it, but of all the leaked tracks it's the one i play the least, i find the literal lyrics, far too, well literal and as far as song topics go for an album track i think you can do better, although the "oh-oh-ohs" are super catchy. I'm not sure how i feel about the 70's stylee strings as well, i think it plods a bit too much as well, and the end V/O is lame. Anywho after me picking apart the new song i still love Ben Folds and the other tracks of the new album are going to be great i think, especially Cologne.

This was probably the second new song that hooked me. I couldn't tell at first whether it was live or not, but really, he's telling the story about a concert experience and the crowd does add that atmosphere, so it doesn't bother me that much. LOVE the strings. The bridge is the part that sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.
The video is pretty cool, although it feels a little lazy at some points, like the guy just wanted to get a drink and call it a night, but that kinda adds to the chrm of it. Love the ending of it.

Since I didn't see it mentioned, he fell from the stage at "Club Quattro" in Hiroshima, the reason for the name...

If it as small as the "Club Quattro" in Shinjuku, then I can believe why.... I saw John Butler there a while back, there just isn't any room.

I love this song.  Its out of the box for a bens album.  It does capture the spirit of a live show.  Its just good old fashioned sscreaming at the top of your lungs song that is so representive of a Ben show.  Grant you, its not the most theoretically composed peice of music Ben has wrote.  Thats why it is so nice to hear.  It doesnt have to be overly composed to be great. Lennon/McCarney prooved that years ago! Im looking forward to hearing this at the Orpheum show in Bostonnext week.

I love it too.  Since when are "literal" lyrics a bad thing?  Brian Wilson has done it for decades, and he has created what some feel is the greatest album of all time in Pet Sounds.
