Have you heard some of Ben's oldest recordings? Like the demo for Kalamazoo? Seriously. Thank God Ben met Darren and Robert and whoever else changed him along the way. Kalamazoo back then is funny to me, but if he had released it like that? Thank you for the EP version. :D

Yeah yeah Allison, I've heard the old demos but I figured the sound just progressed over the years. But that was a BFF record made mere months before the self-titled, and it's an entirely different energy, different sound, different band. It's shocking how it changed so drastically in such a short amount of time...

Also, is anyone else utterly blown away by how much BFF's sound changed b/t the unreleased 1st album and the ST? Good call on the shelving.

Does anyone know the complete history of Ben's demo tapes? Going through the liner notes, underneath "Wandering" there's a picture of what I assume is the 1992 demo. However, Protection and Evaporated are also listed as 1992 demo in the vault but aren't on the tracklist in the picture. I assume those were recorded in the "Sony/Tree" era and just not put on that tape. But in terms of full demo tapes, I know there's the 1990 demo, the 1992 demo, and the 1994 BFF demo, am I missing something?

Smoke is listed in iTunes as a ben folds track, not BFF which is interesting.  Definitely BFF.

Isn't the Smoke demo pre-BFF?

Anyone else notice that benfoldsfive.com that has had the same TUBORM theme for 12 years has recently gone down for maintenance? New site soon perhaps?

I can tell he used auto-tune, yes, but it was done tastefully. I have no problem with someone using it, as long as it doesn't take away from the rawness of the vocals. In this case, I dont think it did. The vocal take is far from perfect. And I kinda like it that way. Ben's voice has deepened and lost a bit of power, but he still goes out there every night and sings. He still writes songs that might be just a tad bit out of his vocal range, simply because that's how the song HAS TO BE to be perfect. He isn't taking short cuts to hide  imperfections, and I respect him so much for that. A little auto tune here and there done tastefully, I have no issue with

Can you cite a specific place in the song where you tell it's autotuned?

Ben was on ESPN! I was watching SportsCenter when anchor commenting on Carmelo Anthony shot says: "He's rockin' the suburbs, just like Arcade Fire does." Never thought I would hear a Ben reference on a sports network...

So according to the clip, Ben didn't write the lyrics to "Smoke." I was not aware of this. Does anyone know the who did what on the Ben Folds/Anna Goodman collaborations?

so I know none of you really know me, but I've lurked for so long that I feel like I know some of you.  and i just want to say thanks for being such an awesome, informative, entertaining...um...what would you call it?...message board community.  I recently posted on Benfolds.org and learned the hard way that they're basically like those zombies from I Am Legend.  they just want to suck the life out of me and anyone else who crosses their path.  And The Suburbs is Will Smith.  Or something...

Jesusland is track 3 on Silverman...

General Board / You Don't Know Me Lip Dub
« on: January 23, 2009, 03:53:54 AM »
Hey guys.  So I'm a long time lurker, very very occasional poster.  I got bored the other night and made a lip dub of me doing both Ben and Regina's parts on "You Don't Know Me."  I thought this would be the best place to come to see if it was any good.  Hopefully you'll enjoy it...
