General Board / The Cartoons
« on: August 29, 2015, 01:47:51 PM »
Hey guys, longtime lurker and occasional poster Chris here. Some of you guys might remember that in-depth feature article I did on BFF's breakup awhile back.

I'll cut to the chase. I am here to tell you guys about my band The Cartoons. I haven't don't much advertising on the web, but if I know one thing it's that Ben has been a huge influence on my songwriting and on my band, so I hope you guys don't mind me posting this here. I figured maybe some of you gals and guys will like it.

We are a Ky-based quintet but we play in Nashville often. It would be so rad to record in Ben's studio. I've toured it and it's the best and most equipped analog-based studio I've ever seen.

Anyways I hope some of you guys dig it. Have a good one!

Wrote this article a few months ago. I was pretty proud of it, but it didn't get a lot of circulation.

Still, as a huge fan, I think it's a pretty insightful article. I thought maybe some of you guys might like to check it out.

Eh, I like it. I'll give you this though, the first time I heard it, I hated it. I'm just into the jazzier stuff. But it's not a bad song at all.  The Luckiest is far from my favorite, but it's grown on me over the years. TASC is solid on the piano and playful with the lyrics, so I can't bitch too much.

You can get their album just about anywhere. It's amazing. Easily one of my favorite bands ever. Gonna go see them on Tuesday.

They sound like they're influenced by The Beatles, Queen, Phish, and Ben Folds Five. Incredible band.

I can't imagine Jazz making you dumber. Maybe that's just me.

News / Re: Ryman Auditorium 4-7-09
« on: April 17, 2009, 10:29:26 PM »
Yeah it was interesting.  On the main floor people were confused about whether to stand or not.  Most of the show everyone in the center and on the right side of auditorium stood, and everyone on the left sat (except for me and a couple others).  Then everyone sat for the solo songs except for that one guy who refused and eventually got kicked out.  They stood again when the band came back but then half sat down for Narcolepsy...but then stood up again when they realized it wasn't a quiet song.   And then of course everyone including the left side stood up for the encore.

At the beginning of the show I noticed that Ben had a fake fist on his piano.  After Lullaby Ben was asking what all the commotion was (regarding the guy getting kicked out).  He said, "I don't want to be the only one here that doesn't know what’s going on."  I'm not sure if he ever really figured out what was going on but all of a sudden he stepped on a pedal under his piano and the middle finger of the fist rose.  It was comical.

While the only guy standing may not have been 100% in the right, it was too bad that the crowd around him added to the distraction.  I was on the opposite side of the auditorium and I heard someone yell, “Sit the hell down!”  in the middle of Lullaby.  Additionally the 3 ushers around him also probably blocked people’s view.  My general rule of thumb for seated shows is to stand for all songs with the band, and if the crowd sits for the solo songs I go along with it.  If anyone asks me to sit down I usually do because I’ve been to a lot of shows so I don’t want to ruin anyone else’s experience.

I told someone to sit down during Fred Jones.

Again, I'm new buuut, I just talked to Ben.

I'm an insane Hornby fan so this is the first thing I asked him about. He told me Nick has written some stuff but that he hasn't put any music to anything. This is straight from his mouth.

Sooo..... I know I'm new here but let me just set everyone straight.

NOT BEN.

Seriously, I talked to him tonight at the premiere of Shatner's ballet. I asked him why he deleted his twitter (bsfolds) and man did I feel embaressed. Yeah, bullshit. Another impersonator. And they do such a good job of getting down Ben's sense of humor too. Oh well.
