Hey guys, I went to the show in Boston, haven't posted about it yet, waiting until I upload my videos.
But I'm really curious what other people's experience has been with the early entry tickets. They were very expensive but I thought that it was going to be worth the splurge to ensure that I was front row for Ben Folds Five, that is until I showed up, when it was clear that this was very poorly planned out. Unlike the nicely worded instruction email, everything was chaotic and extremely disorganized.
According to the email, check in for the early entry tickets would begin at 5:20 and we would be in the theater by 6. The email also said that Security would instruct us and we needed to print out and show them the confirmation email, and show the ID of the ticketholder.
Unfortunately, when I arrived at 4:45, there were several regular ticket holders ahead of me in line, and security was not at all informed about the early entry tickets or what the process would be for the early ticket-holders.
After we explained that we had paid extra for early entry tickets, they did have the regular ticket holders move back in line. However, shortly after that they asked us all to step back, because it is there policy that people who spent at least $15 in the House of Blues restaurant would get first entrance into the theater. I explained to them that this was not fair because we paid a lot of money for these tickets (much more than $15!) and understood that we would be the first ones entering the theater. After some arguing and explaining, they finally agreed to let us in first, but I can only speak for the few of us that got there early and were already close to the front of the line. I'm really not sure that all the people with early tickets got ahead of the regular ticket holders.
Unlike how the email described, there was no "check in." Nobody ever checked our ID or our email to confirm that we actually had early entry tickets, as was said in the email. And they did not even let us into the theater until after 6.
I am wondering why the communication was so poor at this venue, and if it was different at other venues? It seems ridiculous to me that I paid $117 a ticket (almost an extra $70 off the normal price) just to have to fight for my right to enter the theater early. If they didn't have these early entry tickets, I could have paid the normal price and just gotten there super early like I would have anyway!

A Cappella Palooza turns the standard, staid fundraiser on its ear by bringing NBC’s acclaimed music show The Sing Off to Boston for a one night performance. This high-energy, captivating celebration of a cappella — in support of the Mass General Cancer Center — is hosted by show judge Ben Folds, features performances by Folds and four of the show’s finest acts, including 2011 season winner Pentatonix, and is produced by The Sing Off Executive Producer Sam Weisman.

This event is being hosted by my school!!! I can't even believe it!!

Pretty good show, although I was pretty disappointed that everyone sat for most of it. When Ben first came out, about 10 of us up front stood up, but no one else did so we sat back down. I think it was because he started out with a new song, and not one of the more upbeat ones. When he started playing Kate, everyone stood up and for the rest of the show.
A Working Day
Doc Pomus
Sleazy (Ke$ha cover)
Saskia Hamilton (f*cked up the lyrics a bit)
Rock this Bitch (will post video later)
Still Fighting It
From Above
Claire's Ninth
Annie waits
Levi Johnston's Blues

Best Imitation of Myself

Zak and Sara
Kate (At this point people stood up)
You Don't Know Me

Rockin the Suburbs

The audience definitely felt more alive after they stood up. And Ben seemed much happier. Waited around afterward, but his manager said that Ben wouldn't be coming out because it was too cold :( I really wanted to get my poster signed.

News / Ben Folds and Merton make a PSA

Remember Merton?
Apparently some people still refused to believe that he wasn't Ben Folds, so they made this public service announcement.

Sentimental Guy
Still fighting It
All You Can Eat
Levi Johnston's Blues

Rockin' The Suburbs

The Luckiest
Not The Same

Kate Miller-Heidke is incredible! Bought the cd after the show, along with a really awesome poster that says Ben Folds and a piano and has a picture of a Ben on a bicycle, wearing a suit with tails.
After the first song, someone in the front row gave him some coffee. He said something like he wasn't really being serious about that, or he was just joking around. It was pretty funny.
I don't know if you all knew this or not, but he said that the theater that was here before it became the House of Blues, was where the Ben Folds Live cover was shot. Didn't know that!
Great show! We stuck around after but got into a car behind the fence and left. It might have been because the game at fenway got out at the same time as the show and there were crowds of people around. It's a shame, I really wanted to get my poster signed. :-(

News / One Down: The Ben Folds Musical
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:03:35 PM »
So my school (Boston University) is putting on a Ben Folds musical. Was super stoked about it until I found out it's the same night as a concert I already bought tickets to. Still, thought I'd post details in case anyone in the area wanted to check it out.

One Down:
An Original Musical featuring the music of Ben Folds

Saturday, April 24th 8:00 P.M.
George Sherman Union: Conference Auditorium
"One Down" tells the story of six high school seniors trying to make it to graduation despite the pressures of family, relationships, and impending adulthood. Through the honest, heartfelt, and often funny music of Ben Folds, our main character and his best friends learn one of the toughest lessons life has to offer: it sucks to grow up, but everybody does.

So like we know, proceeds from this show are going to Snuzz. (I learned last night that it's actually pronounced Snooze. I had no idea)
I have some videos from the show which I probably won't be able to upload until next week. Sadly, my laptop is broken and I don't think I'm allowed to upload stuff onto the library computers.
Anyway, we had quite a time trying to get there. We missed two trains because we were really stupid and couldn't figure out where our train was supposed to be. Apparently the 2 on our ticket did NOT refer to the track number. But we got there at 7, right when the doors open. A little later than we wanted, but we weren't too far back.
It was a solo show. I think I like it with the band better. He opened with Free Coffee without the distortion which sounded weird and naked. I'm not sure why he did that. We sung the Snuzz song The apology, which he wanted someone to put on youtube and cut it down to just the refrain so that it looked like we sang the whole thing, but he couldn't remember any of the words.
He finally explained why he keeps playing Bitches Ain't Shit even though he retired it. He said he'll play it if he hasn't played it at that venue before.
Highlights for me were secret life and Tom and Mary. Haven't heard those live ever. Also enjoyed Kate since I haven't seen that since my first show. This one was number 7 for me.
He broke two keys off of the piano and also broke the lowest D key, it was pretty funny. He said their piano was really old. I wasn't sure why he didn't have his own?
Can't for the live of me remember what the Rock this Bitch was about, but we'll see when I upload the videos.
I did my best with the set list. I might have left something out. It's not in the right order except for the first and last few songs.
Free Coffee (No distortion)
Annie Waits
Sentimental Guy
Zak and Sara
Secret Life of Morgan Davis
Still Fighting It
All That You Can Eat
The Apology- Snuzz
Rock this Bitch
Picture Window
Dr. Yang
Tom and Mary
Such Great Heights
You Don't Know Me
Rockin the Suburbs
Bitches Ain't Shit
One Angry Dwarf

EDIT: I added Effington, Still Fighting It, and All That You Can Eat

Musical discovery / Crash Kings
« on: July 30, 2009, 07:17:35 PM »
Being an avid Scrubs fan still mourning the loss, I was checking out Zach Braff's facebook page today and he was raving about Crash Kings. I thought I'd share because according to Itunes they "occupy a curious unclaimed space between the White Stripes and Ben Folds Five" and "Crash Kings lean a bit too heavily on the Folds part of the equation, loving his pounding eighth notes and clever-clever wit."

General Board / We're smart. We listen to Ben Folds.

I found this interesting article correlating SAT scores with the music people listen to.
Proudly, Ben Folds is correlated with high SAT scores.
Just thought you should know. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Tour Board / Ben in Boston
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:07:47 AM »
According to this:
Ben will be at Boston College in March, but why isn't it on his tour website. It says they've already paid for it which makes it pretty official. Even if it's only open to BC students, wouldn't it still be up there?
God I hope it's not only for them. I have to be there.

General Board / Do you know Ben Folds? (Facebook Ad)
« on: December 14, 2008, 08:22:35 PM »
Has anybody tried this quiz as seen on a Facebook ad?
I'll warn you it's pretty difficult. Makes that tricky crossword puzzle look like a piece of cake.

And if you pass you get a free ringtone!
(Not that I really trust that though)

They really don't show a lot of each song. But you can see Effington in full on another video, but that's it. He gives an adorable nod after it.

I didn't know he needed an "extra hand" for Before Cologne.

These people look kind of dead. But the announcer is really into it, and so is the black guy next to him.
