General Board / Ben Folds Master Class At Cox Convention Center, OKC
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:44:13 PM »
Hey guys! it's been a while since I've posted on here, although I read frequently. Anyway, I went to this master class tonight! Was anyone else on The Burbs there? was a little misleading; while the headline states that it was at UCO, it was in fact at the Cox Center (although UCO was affiliated). I have an audio recording of the entire thing which turned out pretty good, and I'll have it posted on here as soon as I import it and clean it up a bit! There were other cameras there, though, so a better recording may see the light of day eventually.

I'll post more detailed notes later when I get a chance to really listen to the recording, but some basic info about it:

- I sat on the front row, right in front of Ben. I have some pretty decent pictures I can put up later.
- The master class and interview was run by Scott Booker, who is the manager for The Flaming Lips (who operate here in OKC). I was lucky enough to attend another master class of his at my school 2 years ago. Other members of The Flaming Lips, including Wayne Coyne, were in attendance and sitting very closely. I managed to get both Wayne and Ben in the same picture!
- It was Q&A format, about 2 hours long, and was VERY informative and interesting. There were lots of things we've heard in interviews before, and lots of interesting things I didn't know. He talked about his fascination with music at an early age (stuff we've heard on his iTunes Originals interview), early music projects (he mentions Majosha!), and when he failed his drum jury at the University of Miami and threw his drums in the lake. There's tons more-- seriously, some good stuff. Can't wait to share it with you guys!

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot to mention this, but I actually got to ask him a question! It was about his interest in writing a musical in the future and what his vision for a musical is (I study music theatre at OCU, so I planned this question ahead of time. You know I'll be auditioning for that shit when he writes it!)

Anyone else?  I got the Deluxe edition.

Also, how long does it take to receive your order?  I remember last time I got Songs For Silverman a day early.

Transcription / Kweller transcription?
« on: January 16, 2007, 09:10:55 PM »
I know this doesn't relate directly to Ben Folds, obviously... but there is no Kweller transcription message board to my knowledge.

Does anyone know where I can find a midi or .pdf of "Penny on a Train Track"?

General Board / Just noticed something... HILARIOUS!
« on: September 10, 2006, 07:21:26 PM »
Click "lyrics" next to Learn To Live With What You Are on Ben's MySpace to see some hilariously wrong lyrics.  I'm willing to bet Ben himself put them on there as a joke.

"you got to shake that ass
like you mean it
come on girl
come on girl
don't let me down
give it to me
ah yeah
and one more thing...
how you like that baby?
i could make a castle
from a single grain of sand
let's hit it right now
gotta do it while you can
you've got to learn
to live with what you are
and you should also
learn the right version
of american history
and not the one you've been
brainwashed with
come on baby
let's dance til the morning light
got to learn to live
learn to live
learn to live
without that truck stop coffee
i think i love you"

General Board / Supersunnyspeedgraphic Cover Art
« on: September 10, 2006, 07:14:51 PM »
I don't think this has been posted before.  If it has, sorry.  For some reason the search page won't load for me.

Anyway, if you play "Learn To Live With What You Are" on Ben's MySpace, you can see the cover art... and it looks EXACTLY like Speed Graphic.

Kind of disappointing, really.

Tour Board / Grand Prairie, TX show 11/19/2005
« on: November 20, 2005, 10:50:57 AM »
What a fantastic show!  That was certainly the best Ben concert I have ever been to.  Setlist:

with band
1. Gone
2. Trusted
3. There's Always Someone Cooler Than You
4. Bastard
5. Jesusland
6. Jesusland (Radio Version)
7. Rock This Bitch (Freebird version)
8. Still Fighting It
9. Long, Tall Texan (Lyle Lovett cover)
10. You To Thank
11. "Girl, We Can Do Anything" (not an official title, but those were the first lyrics he used.  He said that he made it up during the sound check.)
12. Annie Waits
13. Landed
14. Bitches Ain't Shit
15. Fred Jones, Part 2
16. Evaporated
17. Emaline
18. One Down
19. Brick
20. Army
with band
21. The Ascent Of Stan
22. Zak And Sara
23. Rockin' The Suburbs
24. Not The Same
25. Philosophy (Inc. Misirlou)
26. Narcolepsy
27. One Angry Dwarf And 200 Solemn Faces

the only complaints I have is that he could have played something cool like Underground rather than Brick.  He also, for some reason, didn't do the bass solo in Rockin' The Suburbs  :(.  I'm the one who requested Jesusland Radio Version and Long, Tall Texan (I shouted to "play a Texan song").  I also got to meet Ben, Jared, and Lindsey after the show!  I actually talked to Jared for several minutes, and Lindsey recognized me from the front row.  On another interesting note, I was standing right next to Lowdre from these boards, and she got some great pictures!

General Board / Austin City Limits - Did anyone notice...
« on: November 07, 2005, 12:39:50 PM »
That Ben fell as he was walking off the stage?!?!  I was surprised that the people who already saw it havn't commented on it.  And the weird part was the fact that he fell and the show just... ended.  No explaination.  No Ben getting up and saying "I'm OK."  Nothing.

It's at the very end, when Ben is walking toward the camera next to Jared, then you see him trip and just drop out of the frame.

General Board / Priceless Ben Folds Moments
« on: September 27, 2005, 07:53:54 PM »
I started this topic at the .com a while back, and I just thought I would bring it here.

How about we list different funny things, (such as improvisations or bloopers) that have happened at concerts that we have been to. If possible, list the concert it was at.

I'll start. At the Norman, OK show on Feb. 10, Ben sang the "McDonalds line" verse of Rockin' The Suburbs twice! He realized he said the wrong verse the first time and paused for a second, then during the second time, he said "I've got it now! I'm pissed off but I'm too polite, ONCE AGAIN... When people break in the Mcdonalds line, ONCE AGAIN..." and so on. And he did that Stairway to Heaven improv in the form of an apology song for cancelling.

Check the tour section of the .com!  I'm so excited!  It's been FOREVER,

General Board / Cough in You To Thank
« on: August 30, 2005, 04:32:41 PM »
Remember that cough at the beginnning of You To Thank?

Ben is obviously aware of the fact that there is a cough in that song... because he makes fun of it in the iTunes Originals verison.  At the same part where the cough usually is, he clears his throat loudly and purposefully.
I just thought I would share, because I found this humourous  ;D.  Also, if you listen with headphones, you can hear one of the band members whistling the tune during the chorus.

General Board / Landed iTunes Original version
« on: August 30, 2005, 04:03:00 PM »
Has anyone noticed that Landed on the iTunes originals album  is different from the SFS version?  This might not seem strange, but doesn't say "(iTunes Originals version)" by it like some of the tracks do, and it sounds like a professional studio recording.  First off, it has a slightly higher tempo than the SFS version.  (SFS version is 9 seconds longer)  Also, the bass, drums, and backup vocals are noticeably different.  My guess is that this is the version Ben did when he recorded SFS by himself, before he decided to record it with Jared and Lindsay.

Transcription / Request: Gracie Rock Version
« on: August 20, 2005, 05:10:45 PM »
The title says it all!  Is there anyone here who can transcribe it?

News / Landed Video (version 2) download?
« on: August 17, 2005, 07:17:04 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get a downloadable version of the 2nd Landed video?  The one on the .com site... but an actual video file instead of the stupid streaming crap.

Tour Board / Tulsa, OK show
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:32:52 AM »
I thought it was pretty good, although Ben didn't seem as energetic as he usually is.  The setlist was as follows:

1. Bastard
2. Gone
3. Zak And Sara
4. Jesusland
5. Still Fighting It
6. You To Thank
7. Careless Whispers (feat. Rufus Wainwright)
8. Landed
9. Bithces Ain't Shit
10. Philosophy
11. The Luckiest (solo)
12. Narcolepsy (solo)
13. Late
14. Gracie (rock version)
15. Not The Same

While he was explaining the 3-part harmony for Not The Same, he decided to changed the "aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh"s to "Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuufuuuuuuuuuuus!" because Rufus was coming on next, hehe.

By the way, does anyone know the setlists for Ben Lee and Rufus that night?  An also, if anyone has photos that would be cool, too.  Thanks.
