General Board / Ben Folds Master Class At Cox Convention Center, OKC
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:44:13 PM »
Hey guys! it's been a while since I've posted on here, although I read frequently. Anyway, I went to this master class tonight! Was anyone else on The Burbs there? was a little misleading; while the headline states that it was at UCO, it was in fact at the Cox Center (although UCO was affiliated). I have an audio recording of the entire thing which turned out pretty good, and I'll have it posted on here as soon as I import it and clean it up a bit! There were other cameras there, though, so a better recording may see the light of day eventually.

I'll post more detailed notes later when I get a chance to really listen to the recording, but some basic info about it:

- I sat on the front row, right in front of Ben. I have some pretty decent pictures I can put up later.
- The master class and interview was run by Scott Booker, who is the manager for The Flaming Lips (who operate here in OKC). I was lucky enough to attend another master class of his at my school 2 years ago. Other members of The Flaming Lips, including Wayne Coyne, were in attendance and sitting very closely. I managed to get both Wayne and Ben in the same picture!
- It was Q&A format, about 2 hours long, and was VERY informative and interesting. There were lots of things we've heard in interviews before, and lots of interesting things I didn't know. He talked about his fascination with music at an early age (stuff we've heard on his iTunes Originals interview), early music projects (he mentions Majosha!), and when he failed his drum jury at the University of Miami and threw his drums in the lake. There's tons more-- seriously, some good stuff. Can't wait to share it with you guys!

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot to mention this, but I actually got to ask him a question! It was about his interest in writing a musical in the future and what his vision for a musical is (I study music theatre at OCU, so I planned this question ahead of time. You know I'll be auditioning for that shit when he writes it!)

The streams won't work for me either :(

Your Dogs?  I hope someone recorded this show.

P.S.  This Ben guy sure does like writing songs about Dogs.  And cream of wheat.

Can someone rip the audio of this?  I don't see why we couldn't have it on WUWTL since it's a demo.

What a great show!  I met Allison and Jpar... the latter of who was recognized by Ben as going to his 60th show, and got to request Steven's Last Night in Town!  Thanks for that request... Ben's drum solo was killer.

I always assumed that "Stems and Seeds" was a reference to marijuana.  I'm not sure Ben smokes now, but I'm SURE he did in the BFF days.

Look at the S&S album art.  The stripes get smaller as they move in-- it looks like the album "Way to Normal" is being rolled in a giant striped rolling paper (anyone familiar with pot culture knows you roll them from the middle and work your way out).

I also am in the camp that loves Songs for Silverman.  It's definitely not as "fun" as his other albums, but it's very good musically.  Also, there is great vocal harmonies in almost every track.

At the Dallas concert last week, I actually heard someone near me groan when he started to play "You To Thank."  I thought it was pretty cool, though, because he hasn't played that in a while, to my knowledge.

I saw those Dr. Yang rolling papers a couple of weeks ago, and I already have them :)

Album Board / Re: Spelling of Brainwashed/Brainwascht

It really bothers me that Brainwashed/Brainwascht is not consistent with the rest of the "fake" and real song spellings.

It should be the other way around.

There are 4 bonus tracks on the Japanese disc, but they're all from the 'fake' album.

But at a much better bitrate.
Are they fully mastered, that's really what I want now?

The bonus 'fake' tracks sound MUCH better on the Japanese import than they did on the download. Lots of background stuff going on I hadn't heard before.

Anyone want to put those on WUWTL? :)

Someone should have requested "I Paid My Money"...

Anyone else?  I got the Deluxe edition.

Also, how long does it take to receive your order?  I remember last time I got Songs For Silverman a day early.
