Jamie Cullum has had to pull out due to ill health, so it's just a Ben Folds solo show. As a result, a number of tickets (good seats) are back on sale. It's this Sunday and Monday's a bank holiday! I was able to transfer from my restricted seats to Row G, front section. :)

Tour Board / Ben Folds UK date - Cheltenham Jazz Festival, 30 April 2017

Just spotted this!  It's with Jamie Cullum - I was never a fan of his "pop" stuff but he's whizz when he's smacking the piano about like his hero.  On sale Wednesday 1 March at 1pm (or now if you're a member of the festival society).

Haven't spotted a thread about this anywhere else, apologies if I missed it.

Well, the Bristol show was similarly amazing.  Same setlist as above minus The Luckiest, because the show had to start 15 minutes late due to traffic problems in Bristol.  Those problems were so bad that I bet some people still missed some of it - fortunately I live in the centre and can walk everywhere.  He claimed that the concerto was the whole thing (not just movements 2/3) so perhaps that was different from London - having not heard it before I can't confirm.  It was something else, that's for sure.  He's listened to a lot of Gershwin.

The Rock This Bitch element was based on some local toilets (and the big sign for them) that has become a standing joke for Ben, and he mentions it every time he comes here.  The lyrics were written in advance this time rather than being made up on the spot.  That's about it really, was fantastic.

Yeah shouldn't be a problem selling them.

Have to admit I'm confused why the London date is so cheap - 30 so less than the other tour dates, and significantly less than the Ben Folds Five Brixton date (which was nearly 50 if I remember rightly).
Brixton was 37.50 plus fees.

I too have Bristol second row tickets.  Although in my case it's a 15 minute walk from my flat.  You should be able to sell them nearer the time I reckon Deano.

Well, this is great.  And I like that two of the songs are from dates I attended (Bristol, London)...

Yep, my comparison of the Bristol and Brixton (4th) shows: Bristol, much better sound (and better view because I was down the front), Brixton: sound was pretty bad in the first half, but it was the better show.

Time for me to start getting excited again after my first dose in Bristol.  Who's in?

I've heard a few people complaining that the sound was bad in Leeds, so it's nice to hear positive reports...

Tour Board / Re: Question about show timings

I have to say, with the Brixton show I'd be expecting "normal" gig timings, so finishing around 11.  The O2 Academy sites usually put up stage times on the day of the gig, or sometimes the day before.

As far as I know from old shows, Ben and Co didn't do the Misirlou bit for "Philosophy" because "Misirlou" was used in "Pyser" at least as far back as the WEEA shows. (There are some rare early versions of "Pyser", like the one that opens Spare Reels, where Ben plays a completely different solo during the middle section before "Misirlou" became standard.)  "Misrilou" didn't show up in "Philosophy" until the solo tour.  After that it became standard for solo *and* full band renditions.  However, the coupling of the two resulted in Ben actually concluding at least a few 2008 performances of "Philosophy" with the ending of "Pyser" instead of returning to "Rhapsody." (He definitely did this when I saw him in Adrian, MI that year.)
I think it's fair to say I defer to your greater knowledge.  :)

Maybe it was just luck of the draw! I don't ever recall hearing the album version live before  ;D
Well, this is the first time I've heard it played "straight" but I seem to recall it always used to be the Misirlou thing, then it would go back into the original Rhapsody In Blue bit.  My brain could be playing tricks on me though.

It just struck me that in all the times that I've watched Ben Folds (Five and solo), the piano solo at the end has always been the Misrilou version, EXCEPT on Saturday in Nottingham where he did the original album version. Can anyone else confirm this, or am I finally going mad?
Didn't it used to generally be both, and now it's just the original?

Tour Board / Dublin
« on: November 27, 2012, 03:49:14 AM »
Just seen the Dublin setlist and they played Thank You For Breaking My Heart.  I'd LOVE to hear that in Brixton, although whether quiet ones will go down all that well in such a large space, I don't know.  In Bristol there was near silence for some of the quiet bits, which was ace, but Brixton will have nearly four times as many people...

Alice Childress could have been played faster as could have Sky High
Actually I loved the way they did Sky High.  Worked better for me than the recorded version!
